Professional triathlon trainer and winner of a JetBlack VOLT Smart Trainer, Turn Riser Block and Rocker Plate.
On the other side of the world, listening to a common language, delivered with familiar accents can make you feel just around the corner. Jeff McGrath was living and working in Sweden after leaving his native New Zealand. He loves to listen to Fitter Radio from his home nation to keep up to date with all things triathlon and fitness based. Although he already had an indoor trainer that he uses for his work as a Triathlon Trainer and for his own workouts, he happily entered the competition to win a JetBlack VOLT Suite when he heard it on the show. Now he has it, he was more than happy to swap it out.
“I am very impressed with the VOLT trainer. It was so simple to assemble. It’s a nice size so doesn’t need too much space. The performance however is where the rubber meets the road. It is fantastic in my view. It is really quiet during operation, and although I really liked my previous trainer – this is a step up.”
“The Rocker Plate is so cool. The training experience is really enhanced. There is much less stress on both my body and my bikes. Plus it gives a more ‘road riding’ feel with lateral movements. It also looks good!”
Using his hard earned experience as a eleven times New Zealand Ironman finisher and six times Ironman Kona finisher, plus the ten years of being a professional triathlon trainer, Jeff went on to reveal how much the Rocker Plate has assisted his riding technique.
“It helped me identify an imbalance I have between my road bike position and my time trial bike position. The weight is obviously transferred differently by me and could be some of the reasons for some injury niggles.”
His love of the sport and the need to maintain fitness through the harsh winters means that Jeff is a strong advocate for indoor training.
“Due to the climate in Sweden, there is simply no alternative to indoor training during some months of the year. Winter is very dark and very cold. Between December and April, the roads are covered in snow and ice, so outdoor riding is simply not possible. Indoor training is time efficient for busy people who struggle to meet daily demands in home, work, family, and social life. It is safer than road riding with no other road users to consider, choosing the right clothing for the environmental conditions is not necessary. It is more efficient as there are no downhills or freewheeling, and pre ride/post ride procedures are quicker.”
